Twins GM Bill Smith is fucking worthless. Case in point: Jack Zduriencik, the M’s GM.
The Mariners had a need at short, so they filled it with Jack Wilson (who, by the way, they preferred over new Twins SS JJ Hardy) late last season. They had a need at third (as if Beltre was not good enough), so they sign Chone Figgins — who also could fill a hole in LF or another infield spot. Ichiro + Figgins at the top of any order is almost unfair. They already have one of the best young pitchers in the game in Felix Hernandez, but still they manage to bring in Cliff Lee. Not gonna see too many losing streaks with those guys going back-to-back in the rotation. So where are they weak? Power. Which is why they’re (reportedly) going after Jason Bay. They need a catcher, too. You know who would be a good fit? Redmond. He’s originally from Spokane, I believe, and probably wouldn’t work as an everyday guy, but I’d be curious to see who they have in the minors that would work in a platoon situation.
Meanwhile, Bill F. Smith is huddled in a corner somewhere, clutching his binky and crying for his mommy to make it stop. Needs abound — 3B and pitching, for starters — but … NOTHING.
I will always be a Twins fan first. But having a team nearby that’s actively trying to improve — rather than sitting back and saying, “Yeah, but, we have a pretty new stadium! And Joe Mauer for another year!” — is a pleasure.
